Site-Specific Projection Mapping & Visual Design in a Heritage Garden

In September 2025, the open-air garden of the Avetik Isahakyan House-Museum in Yerevan hosted the Isahakyan-150 Jubilee Concert, marking the 150th anniversary of the legendary Armenian poet. The evening featured performances by mezzo-soprano Zhanna Hovsepyan and pianist Hayk Melikyan, uniting classical art songs with contemporary visual storytelling.

To transform the historic courtyard into an atmospheric stage, C-Squared engineered non-invasive 3D projection mapping across the garden's trees, perimeter walls, and historical facade - creating a visual environment that adapted to every acoustic nuance.

Event Overview

  • Event: Isahakyan-150 Jubilee Concert

  • Date: September 2025

  • Location: Avetik Isahakyan House-Museum Garden, Yerevan, Armenia

  • Featured Artists: Zhanna Hovsepyan (Mezzo-soprano), Hayk Melikyan (Pianist, Honored Artist of Armenia)

  • Production Scope: Outdoor 3D projection mapping, live internal piano video stream, real-time audio-reactive programming, and architectural lighting design

Organic Projection Mapping Across Natural Textures

Designing for a historic heritage site required a careful visual approach that respected the venue's natural character while enhancing the performance space.

  • Layered Outdoor Calibration: High-resolution projector arrays were calibrated to map across complex, non-flat surfaces—including stone walls, foliage, and tree bark- without visual distortion.

  • Acoustic-Visual Harmony: Projections moved gently across the garden foliage, shifting in color intensity and motion to follow the vocal dynamics and piano phrasing.

Inside the Instrument: Real-Time Live Visuals

A key technical feature of the production was an internal camera system installed directly inside the grand piano.

  • Macro Mechanism Feed: High-definition video captured the mechanical movement of hammers, dampers, and vibrating strings, casting real-time close-up feeds onto the surrounding garden walls.

  • Audio-Reactive Integration: Live audio feeds were processed instantaneously, causing projected light patterns and mechanical video overlays to pulse and evolve in direct sync with the live acoustic vibrations.

Preserving Cultural Heritage Through Modern Tech

The Isahakyan-150 Jubilee Concert highlighted C-Squared’s capability to integrate site-specific projection mapping and real-time media processing into intimate cultural celebrations, honoring historic legacy through digital innovation.
